Bible Memorization

Why we memorize scripture:

Psalms 119:11: says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. ” The Bible is God’s love letter to us from Genesis to Revelation. Over and over within its pages we are told of His marvelous love for us. Repeatedly, we see His promises to us that bring us prosperity, peace and joy. Found within the pages of God’s Holy Word, the Bible, we are given instructions for life and the recipe for a life more abundant. In John 10:10 Jesus said, ”The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. “

In order to enjoy this abundant life we must first accept Christ as Saviour and then we must build a relationship with the God of the Universe. As we read His marvelous Word we will surely get to know Him and life will take on new meaning. As troubles come our way and satan knocks on our door we are reminded of the loving, protecting hand of God that is revealed to us through His word. It is for this reason that God gave us the above scripture. If we hide His Word in our heart then we are equipped to defeat the devil right in his tracks. He can not defeat us because ” Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (I John 4:4). Therefore, we must saturate our mind and heart with the Word of God that it may be brought to our remembrance when we have need of it.

Memorization Tips

Pray to God and ask Him to help you commit this verse to memory.

Read the verse slowly five times every morning. Write it on an index card or some other paper so that you can keep it near you.

Determine what the verse means. Decide how you can apply that verse to your life. Place the verse in obvious places that you will notice several times a day. Be very careful to concentrate on the “address” where the verse is found in the Bible. Every day, devote an additional 15 minutes of quiet time to reading the verse and putting it to memory.

Invoke the help of a friend or loved one to listen to you mid-week and then at the end of the week as you recite the verse. Find a person to keep you accountable for your memory progress. Periodically review your memory verses keeping them sharp in your mind and close to your heart. Use these verses in your everyday teachings to and conversations with your friends and family.
