The Power of Jesus Christ

There is so much to say about Jesus. Words fail us as we begin to take a look at His life and recount the wonders He performed and the love He demonstrated. No other person in History has done what Christ has done. Many have claimed power but He and He alone demonstrated it.

Let’s take a journey through the scriptures and highlight some of the miracles that Jesus performed.

Let’s look in Luke 5 and watch as at His command the fisherman after toiling all night but to no avail toss out their nets and ” they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

In Mark 1:24-26 we see His power over demons. ¶ ” And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with Thee, Thou Jesus of Nazareth? art Thou come to destroy us? I know Thee who Thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

In Matthew 8:2-3 we see His power to cleanse the leper. ” And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped Him, saying, Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth His hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

In Luke 5:18-25 we see the power of God that is unleashed with our faith. ” And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before Him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when He saw their faith, He said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (He said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

In Mark 3:1-5 we see the power of His compassion as He heals the withered hand. ” And He entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. And they watched Him, whether He would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse Him. And He saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. And He saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. And when He had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And He stretched it out: and His hand was restored whole as the other .”

In Matthew 8:23-27 we see His power over creation. ” And when He was entered into a ship, His disciples followed Him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but He was asleep. And His disciples came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And He saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!”

In Matthew 9:27-29 we see His power to heal the blind. ” And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed Him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when He was come into the house, the blind men came to Him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto Him, Yea, Lord. Then touched He their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it .”

In Mark 6: 40-44 we see His power to supply our every need. ” And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided He among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

In Mark 7:32-35 we see His power heal the deaf and make the dumb to speak. ” And they bring unto Him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech Him to put His hand upon him. And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers into his ears, and He spit, and touched his tongue; And looking up to heaven, He sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain .”

Now the recorded miracles are many. There are far more than we have written here. But more importantly, He is still doing miracles today. Many of His miracles are exactly as those recounted in the scriptures but some are even deeper than those recorded. For instance, He is still healing the blind literally and those of us who are blinded to the sin of this world. He opens our eyes to see the sins we commit that we might confess them and be forgiven (I John 1:9). He is still keeping His promise in Philippians 4:13 and 4:19 where He tells us we can do all things in His strength and that He will supply our every need. Just as He fed the five thousand He feeds us and our souls daily. ” And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God” (Luke 4:4). Just as He heals the deaf and dumb He opens our ears that we might hear and receive the Words of God.

But the greatest demonstration of His power was His resurrection from the dead. ” I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death ” (Revelation 1:18). We are alive in Christ. ” Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:11). I want you to think about it for a moment. That same power that created all things (Colossians 1:16) and defeated death (John 11:25) lives in you. You have all power and now is the time for you to start living your life in Him that you might tap into all the power He has for you. ” And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, ” (Ephesians 3:19-20).
