Mirror Image

Do you ever look in the mirror and think you look like everyone else? If you said ‘yes’ to that question, answer this one: do you sometimes think of ways you could alter your appearance to look slightly different from the rest of the world? To stick out in a crowd a tad more than usual and to set yourself apart from others?

Maybe you’re someone who sees himself or herself in the mirror and is thankful that you look “normal”. You like to blend in with the crowd. The truth is, if you’re a Christian, no matter what you look like physically, your inward appearance better be drastically different than your non-believing friends’ inner shells! Who cares what your outer shell looks like, set your focus on your insides, your soul, your true self. Become in-tune with God. It’s very possible to accomplish this task, and let me tell you it is overwhelmingly rewarding! He (Jesus) says, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son,” John 14:13.

We are told in the first part of Matthew 6:8, “Be not ye therefore like unto them.” The “them” refers to the world or non-believers we may live next door to, work beside, and even are good friends with. I remember when I was younger my friends and I always wanted to dress alike, wear the same hair-do’s and even talk the same lingo. We wanted to look exactly alike so no one could tell us apart from one another. Of course, things have changed now, but I wonder if we don’t still play those same kinds of games with the world. Do we watch for the newest fashion trends to come our way or do we pass on the latest jokes to our friends, which we should or should not be telling? We do these things and many similar things like this. I know I’m guilty of this, and I’m sure if you’re honest with yourself, you’ll see it, too. But you know what? We have so much more than “them!” The Bible says, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us,” Romans 8:37. Did you catch that? We are more than conquerors! That puts a permanent smile on my face! What a blessing that is to know!

Yes, let’s look different for we want to show the world that we have God living in our hearts! Be a mirror image of God. You couldn’t pick a better, more perfect mold to model after! Just look at Matthew 5:48: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
